Golden Retrievers Information - Common Mistakes in House Training and How to Fix Them
Posted by DogFriend on November 30, 2009

The right Golden Retrievers information can help make you and your dogs' differences easy to deal with. Many dog owners discipline their Goldens' in a harsh way that the dog could not understand. This worsens the problem and instigates fear, which leads to a more complicated problem that is hard to solve.

Do not commit the same mistake by pushing your dogs' face on his mess when he commits an accident. A young pup has no bladder control and an adult dog needs time to distinguish his potty spot. Be patient in potty training your dog.

Even before he comes inside the house, introduce him to a potty spot in the yard that you have allotted for him. If you notice him sniffing or circling around, take him to the same potty spot where he can eliminate.

A pup needs to go to the potty every two hours and every time he eats, drinks, plays, wakes up and before he sleeps.

Do not allow everybody in the family to create their own rules. You should establish rules before the puppy arrives and make sure everyone knows and follows them. If not, your kids will make their own rules which will be very confusing for your dog.

Do not allow your dog to roam freely around the house when he is not yet house trained. They are dogs who are inquisitive and still don't know your rules. If you allow his leash to hang loose, you can never be sure what damage he can bring to your home especially if he is unsupervised.

Do not give your dog unintentional approval. If he whines during the first nights or jumps when he sees people, do not give him unintended approval by rubbing his ears or patting his head. He may think that what he is doing is just fine and you are rewarding him for wrong behavior.

Do not drag your dog when you want him to follow you. A slight tug on the leash is just enough to grab your dogs' attention and distract him from his wrong behavior. If he is not walking beside you while on leash, he does not understand yet what the leash is for and you have not properly trained him for it. By dragging him, you are instilling fear which will make it even harder to train him to be comfortable on leash.

The important thing in house training is to practice, use positive reinforcement and patience. Your new dog cannot learn all the things that you want him to learn overnight. Give him time to adjust and make sure he understands your cues by using clear and consistent commands. Practice with him and make sure that he is rewarded for right behavior.

Be patient and forgiving with his mistakes.

A patient owner will house train his new dog faster than the short-tempered one.
